Sorry for the weeks without updates, I was out of town in Kentucky without Obie for two weeks and then I figured no one actually read this anymore. Thank you, Kat Chiasson, for requesting an update and giving my funemployed summer purpose again.
It was a tough two weeks without Obie, especially since there were a few times when I was in the hotel by myself. The only times I'd stayed in a hotel alone before was as I drove back and forth between Kenyon and Omaha and got caught in blizzards, and I had Obie, valiant protector of everything, to ward off evil. Luckily I had Kate at home to give me constant updates on all things Obie, as you can see if you take a glance at her Facebook album basically dedicated to him. When I was finally reunited with Obie he gave me the cold shoulder for a good eight hours as punishment for ditching him. It wasn't until he realized he had someone to sleep with again that he allowed me back into his good graces.
The beginning of that first week back was a little tough for Obie, as the weather went from unseasonably cool and rainy to the normal Nebraska summer fare: heat and through the roof humidity. There were a few days before we turned on the air conditioning when I noticed his normally sleek and well groomed hair was a little greasier and a little poofier. Most of us, I'm sure, can relate. He was a bit offput for a while, spending more time preening and nursing his fragile ego and a little less time chasing after Sadie. I think he knew that with that poofy 'do he just wasn't going to be on top of his game.
When the air came on and his hair returned to normal Obie decided to really step up his attempts to win Sadie's heart, and pursue her more eagerly than ever before. Last night it reached a new peak, when Obie ambushed Sadie, who was sleeping on a chair, and started socking her in the face with his paws. Sadie hissed and howled and spat, and ran into the basement, Obie fast in pursuit. In our basement we have an overflow fridge with a top door that's a freezer. Sadie quickly leapt and clung to the top of the freezer with her tiny little paws. She hoisted her overly large body up onto the top of the fridge with pure upper body strength alone, the effort of which made the freezer door swing open. Then, as the freezer door swung out, she teetered briefly before leaping onto a ledge above the fridge. Obie, who has always lacked the natural grace and finesse that usually comes with being a cat, never stood a chance.
Until next time, Obie fans, I urge you to remember perserverence always pays off in the end. She has to give in eventually, right?
